The Works
The University of Liverpool commissioned the redevelopment of the CTL East Garden to transform an underused outdoor space into a functional, inviting area that would enhance the experience of students, staff, and visitors. The project aimed to deliver a high-quality public realm upgrade through carefully planned construction, landscaping, and the integration of modern street furniture.
Working with Cunliffes Construction Consultancy, we began the works with a utilities detection scan, a dilapidations survey. Construction activities included clearing the existing surface, reducing levels, and laying a geotextile membrane to stabilise the ground. Levels were then built up to prepare for hard and soft landscaping.

The Works
Hard landscaping featured new kerb systems, paving, resin-bound surfacing, and asphalt to improve access and durability. Soft landscaping included the creation of tree pits, placement of new topsoil, turf installation, and planting to increase biodiversity and enhance the garden's appearance. Foundations were cast to support the installation of custom-designed street furniture.
The final stage involved installing street furniture, removing temporary site infrastructure, and cleaning the area in preparation for handover. The project delivered a revitalised, accessible outdoor space that met the University’s ambitions for a more welcoming and sustainable campus environment.
