Refurbishment
The Works
Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust appointed our team to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment of the outdoor therapeutic and recreational areas at Prospect House, an inpatient male and female mental health facility. The works were carried out across three separate locations within the site: LSU1, LSU2, and LSU3. The aim of the project was to improve the safety, functionality, choices in exercise and visual appeal of the outdoor spaces used by service users, creating a more therapeutic environment that supports mental health and wellbeing.
Each unit followed a similar programme of work, beginning with the excavation and removal of the existing hard surfaces. The ground was then prepared with the installation of pin kerbs and the replacement of manhole covers where necessary. Foundations were excavated and poured to accommodate new outdoor equipment, designed specifically for safe environments. Existing paved areas were cleaned thoroughly with jet washing, including re-sanding, to restore surfaces and maintain a high-quality appearance.

The Works
Following groundworks and preparation, new recreational equipment was installed, tailored to suit the needs of the service users while maintaining the safety and security requirements of the facility. This was followed by the application of new rubber crumb surfacing to provide a soft, durable finish that enhances user safety. In LSU2, the refurbishment also included the installation of new basketball markings, a backboard and net, and a fresh tarmac surface to support physical activity within the secure compound.
Decoration of existing boundaries and internal features was carried out in each area, further enhancing the therapeutic quality of the space. Once work in each location was completed, a joint inspection was conducted with Trust representatives to ensure that the refurbishment met all quality expectations.
Despite working in a live and secure healthcare environment, Greenmount Projects ensured that disruption was kept to a minimum through close collaboration with site management. All works were carried out under strict protocols to maintain site security and service user safety, all operatives were accompanied to and from each courtyard with a hospital chaperone who remained with them at all times this included transporting all materials to and from the courtyards.
The newly refurbished outdoor areas now offer a greatly improved environment for service users, encouraging physical activity, social interaction, and engagement with the outdoors—key factors in promoting mental health recovery.
