The Works
The works involved the remodelling of Wigan & Leigh College’s existing Motor Vehicle Workshop, with a focus on modernising the facility and improving its functionality to accommodate new technologies, particularly in the realm of Electrical Vehicles (EVs). The scope of work included various structural and spatial modifications, starting with selective demolition and structural alterations. These changes were made to create new spaces, such as a wash area and an open classroom that now integrates seamlessly with the main workshop area. All modifications were carried out in compliance with Building Control requirements. A new workshop was formed within the existing area, defined by curtain walling that featured large glass panels and signage specifically designed for EVs, enhancing both visibility and branding.
The Works
The mechanical systems also saw significant upgrades, including the replacement of the existing ceiling-mounted compressed air system. The new system features remote-controlled components that can be lowered for student use, thereby improving both functionality and safety. To optimise space usage, the existing car lifts were repositioned, and two new lifts were installed to accommodate a larger working area.
As part of the finishing touches, the workshop flooring was repainted with epoxy paint, enhancing its durability and safety by clearly marking out safe walking zones and vehicle areas.
The project also involved the installation of several bespoke elements tailored to the specific needs of the workshop. These included a media wall, lockers, distribution cabinets, a wash station, and storage units in the EV room. These custom-built components provided practical and functional solutions, contributing to the overall modernisation and efficiency of the workshop space.
In summary, the remodelling project successfully transformed the workshop into a modern, functional facility equipped to support both traditional automotive training and the growing focus on electric vehicles.
