GP x NWAS: Redeveloping the Single Standards

Alexandra Crozier, one of Greenmount Projects’ (GP) interior design team, recently led the redevelopment of the Single Standards for North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) to bring a fresh, cohesive approach to how their stations are built and refurbished across the region. The Single Standards initiative is a detailed set of guidelines that document specifications for everything you can imagine that combine to create a modern ambulance station. Including, but not limited to, wall and floor finishes, variable kitchen designs, FF&E, lighting, mechanical and signage, all tailored specifically to NWAS environments. Their purpose is to create a unified and professional brand identity across all stations, ensuring that every site, whether new or existing, consistently meets the same high standards.

The need for a clear, standardised guide became increasingly important as NWAS expansa bd maintains its estate. With many teams and contractors involved in construction and refurbishment projects, having a single, easy-to-reference document ensures that work is carried out to a consistent appearance, functionality and quality. By implementing the Single Standards, NWAS can deliver facilities that are not only visually cohesive but are also suitable for operational use, supporting their frontline teams and enhancing the working environment.

GP were asked to take on the redevelopment because of our strong track record in estates work, practical design, and technical documentation. Our experience working with large, multi-site organisations meant we understood the importance of clarity, functionality, and brand representation in every detail.

The impact of the new Single Standards will be immediate and far-reaching. Refurbishments will now be simpler and more efficient, allowing projects to progress more smoothly and with quicker turnaround times. Contractors and in-house teams will have a clear, detailed reference at every stage, reducing ambiguity and ensuring that every finished site meets NWAS’s expectations for quality and usability.

To develop the new standards, Alex and the GP team consolidated existing documentation from NWAS’s estates and FM teams into a single, easily navigable document. To bring the guidelines to life, the new Single Standards include a 3D walkthrough of an ideal NWAS station fully compliant with the updated specifications produced by Neil Colley, GP’s Senior 3D Visualiser. It also features detailed examples of small, medium and large kitchen designs, 3D visuals of key spaces, and comprehensive technical specifications.

A key enhancement introduced through this work was the addition of a new dark green into the colour scheme, reflecting the signature NWAS uniform and strengthening the brand identity within the interiors. This green has also been extended to the station exteriors, creating a stronger and more recognisable presence for NWAS sites across the region.

Alexandra and Neil’s work on the Single Standards has laid the foundation for a more consistent, efficient, and high-quality future for NWAS facilities, one that will support their essential services and frontline teams for years to come.
